Rentokil’s history is a captivating tale of innovation, customer dedication, and global expansion. Over the past century, the company’s journey has been marked by groundbreaking innovations, strategic acquisitions, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence.
The story begins with Professor Harold Maxwell-Lefroy, a renowned entomologist who developed a revolutionary timber treatment fluid to combat wood-boring beetles in Westminster Hall, London. The success of this treatment garnered widespread attention, leading him to hire an assistant, Bessie Eades, to help capitalize on the growing demand.
Together, they named the product Rentokil and registered it as a trademark. They established Disinfectants and General Products Limited in 1925 to sell the Rentokil brand. Tragically, Maxwell-Lefroy passed away later that year due to accidental exposure to insecticide fumes in his lab at Imperial College London.
Bessie Eades carried Maxwell-Lefroy’s legacy forward. Recognizing the product’s commercial potential, she acquired the rights from his widow and rebranded the company as Rentokil (Sales) Ltd in 1928. She introduced innovative marketing strategies, emphasizing the effectiveness of Rentokil Timber Fluid and expanding the product range to include insecticides, moth treatments, furniture creams, and germicides. One of the top-selling products was an insecticide named Rentokilit.
In 1944, Eades recruited Dr. Norman Hickin, an entomologist with a talent for public engagement. His expertise in wood-boring beetles and ability to communicate technical knowledge helped shape Rentokil’s brand. Hickin’s patented timber fluid injector, introduced in 1948, became a game-changer, selling over a million units by the 1950s.
While Rentokil was expanding, another company, British Ratin, was making strides in pest control. Established in 1927 by Danish company Sophus Berendsen, British Ratin introduced rodenticide solutions and later expanded into insect control. In 1957, British Ratin and Rentokil merged, forming a stronger entity that officially became Rentokil in December 1960.
Under the Rentokil Group, the company entered a phase of rapid growth. The acquisition of Thomas Harley Ltd in 1961 added proprietary rodent control products like Rodine, still in use today. Rentokil expanded internationally throughout the 1960s and 1970s, establishing a presence in Kenya, Europe, Australasia, Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, and the U.S.
Rentokil’s reputation for scientific research gained global recognition. In 1969, the company established a dedicated laboratory wing at its Felcourt headquarters, housing teams of biologists, entomologists, and chemists. This research-driven approach was instrumental in developing innovative solutions for pest control.
Rentokil also embraced film and publishing as educational tools. A Film Unit, launched in 1959, produced award-winning documentaries using pioneering techniques. During the 1970s, the Rentokil Library published technical books on pest control, further establishing the company’s expertise.
Acquisitions have played a key role in Rentokil’s global dominance. Between 2014 and 2023, the company completed nearly 400 acquisitions worldwide. Strategic investments in the U.S. included JC Ehrlich, Presto-X, and Western Exterminator, making Rentokil the third-largest U.S. pest control company by 2012. The acquisitions of Steritech (2015) and Terminix (2022) positioned Rentokil Initial as the world’s largest pest control company.
Rentokil continued investing in research and development. In 2017, the Global Research and Development Centre opened in the UK, providing facilities for studying pest behavior and testing new products. This was followed in 2024 by the Rentokil Terminix Innovation Center in Dallas, Texas, specializing in termite, mosquito management, and residential pest control research.
